Simon Fraser University: Province Provides $8M for Green Science Building
The Province is investing $8 million in a green science building at Simon Fraser University that will house researchers working on low-cost sources of energy and new treatments for illness, Advanced Education Minister Murray Coell announced today.
“This centralized research and learning space demonstrates the government’s continued support for, and investment in post-secondary education,” said Coell. “This new state-of-the-art facility will enhance and strengthen the leading-edge research and first-class training carried out at Simon Fraser University that provides sustainable solutions to real-world problems.”
The Technology and Science Complex 2 (TASC 2) building is a new research complex that officially opened today in Burnaby. It has unique features like vibration-free floating floors for the use of ultra-high resolution microscopes. The building was designed to support cross-disciplinary research and provides flexible laboratory space. It was built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver environmental standards.
One third of TASC 2 is occupied by 4D Labs that previously received $7 million from the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund. At 4D Labs, a multi-disciplinary team of leading researchers will research, design, and develop new models leading to advancements in the creation of new materials and nano-scale devices that will help the environment and lead to medical breakthroughs. Generally, things at the nano-scale are too small for humans to see. The head of a pin is a million nanometres wide and a human hair is 80,000 nanometres thick.
The other two thirds of TASC 2 houses MITACS (mathematics of information technology and complex systems) and PIMS (Pacific institute for the mathematical sciences) facilities, as well as numerous specialized labs and offices.
“On behalf of the board of governors at Simon Fraser University, and the researchers and students who will benefit from this extraordinary new facility, I thank the government for continuing to invest in post-secondary education,” said Dr. Michael Stevenson, Simon Fraser University president. “These magnificent new facilities put SFU in the front lines of fields like nanomedicine and industrial mathematics.”
A total of 579 projects and over $390 million in funding have been approved by the provincial government under the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund. This funding has leveraged $405 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and another $344 million from other non-provincial government sources, for a total investment in British Columbia’s research infrastructure of over $1 billion.

Edmonton's NorQuest College benefits from 2007 provincial budget
The president and CEO of NorQuest College is encouraged with the provincial government's latest cash injection to post-secondary institutions. "The seven per cent increase in base operating grants will add approximately $250,000 in revenue to the College annually, which will go toward existing and new program development," says Dr. Wayne Shillington. NorQuest will also benefit from an infusion of funding to address deferred maintenance. At present, the College's infrastructure maintenance deficit is more than $14 million. Shillington welcomes funding to offset new policy limiting new tuition fees increases. "Our students, especially those living below the poverty line, will also benefit as a result of these policy changes."

$15.2-Million Thompson Rivers Campus Officially Opens
Advanced Education Minister Murray Coell joined Rick Hansen, Thompson Rivers University officials and community members today for the official opening of the institution’s new $15.2-million campus in Williams Lake, providing space for more than 1,000 students.
“Government’s investment in this new campus improves access for students in the region and provides more opportunities to get the education they need for the future,” said Coell. “The students attending this campus can learn, live and work in Williams Lake, building the local economy with vital skills like nursing, child and youth care and the trades.”
The Ministry of Advanced Education provided $12 million and TRU contributed the additional $3.2 million to build the nearly 7,000 square-metre campus, which is larger than a football field. It houses a new library, 13 additional classrooms, science and computer labs, seminar rooms, large workshops for trades training and 40 faculty offices. The campus in Williams Lake helps TRU continue to provide regional education opportunities as part of the mandate it was given in the 2004 transformation from a university-college into a teaching-focused university.
“The new campus is a first-class post-secondary facility that will meet the needs of learners in the Williams Lake community and the region,” said TRU president Roger Barnsley.
The grand opening of the wireless campus was celebrated with a number of official speakers, a blessing by the local First Nations and the conferral of an honorary doctor of letters on Rick Hansen, president and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation.
“I am truly honoured to be a part of this exciting day. Thompson Rivers University’s new campus is an exciting opportunity for Williams Lake and for thousands of young Canadians that will study here in pursuit of their dreams,” said Hansen, who was born and raised in Williams Lake. Twenty years ago this week, Hansen wheeled through his hometown on his Man In Motion World Tour – a dream that continues to fuel his work today to improve the lives of people with spinal cord injury and related disabilities and advance research towards a cure.
In the past five years, the Province has provided more than $1 billion in new funding for capital projects on campuses across B.C., and has allocated almost $800 million more in capital funding by 2009 to support post-secondary education. Government has also funded more than 17,000 new seats at B.C. universities, colleges and university colleges.
